Spring/Summer ‘17 Retro Inspired Trends

spring summer trends 2017

The spring season is finally upon us! Among sprouting daffodils, sunny evenings and Sundays spent picnicking in the park, the spring/summer season also means new trends and opens up endless new fashion opportunities. It’s finally time to banish tights and boots, in favour of summer dresses and sandals.

To celebrate the new season, we are looking at the spring/summer ‘17 retro inspired trends, perfect for petites…

Super Brights

Inspired by the bold colour choices of the ‘80s, brights are in this season. Bright pinks, yellows and blues played a strong role in Paris Fashion Week, with the likes of Balenciaga, Céline and Valentino all embracing bright and bold colours. Designs were kept simple, to make the colour the focal point, with head to toe styling in the same shade.

We love our Chi Chi Petite Analiza Dress to nail the brights trend this season. In a bright fuchsia, the simple but oh-so flattering cut lets the colour do all the talking.

Seaside Stripes

Looking like they could be straight out of a 1950’s postcard, seaside style stripes are everywhere. The ‘50s was the era for beach hut inspired striped high-waist shorts, breton t-shirts and red and white striped dresses. This spring/summer sees an update of the 1950’s stripe, which has been recreated across various pieces, including wide leg trousers, aline dresses, and of course the iconic high-waist shorts. Petites will find the high-waist shorts the most flattering, with the vertical stripe elongating the leg.

Peekaboo Lace

The cutout trend has been around for a number of years now, but the approach to peekaboo panels is softened for 2017. Semi-opaque is the updated version of the cutout for the spring/summer season. Cutouts concealed with lace and sheer fabrics are to be a big hit for the season ahead, which gave a nod to the 1920s lace dresses and sheer fabrics.

Our Selina Dress by Chi Chi Petite uses delicate lace paneling and sheer fabric, reflecting the peekaboo trend perfectly.

‘80s Redux

‘80s style silhouette-enhancing nipped in waists, flirty hemlines and big shoulders are back from the ‘80s for spring/summer. High-shine fabrics, lots of volume and waist enhancing belts were all over the S/S catwalks. The ‘80s trend was big in 2016, and it’s set to stay for the season ahead. The nipped in waist and enhanced shoulders are the focal point of this trend.

Shirt Dresses

Iconic in the 1940s, shirt or tea dresses were an every day staple. Buttoned up at the front and with a crisp collar and elbow length sleeves, the 1940’s style shirt dress is back for 2017. Worn to the knee and nipped in at the waist, the shape of the shirt dress hasn’t changed much, but 2017 calls for the shirt dress to be made in crisp white cotton. White dresses as a whole are set to be big for S/S, from the traditional shirt dress through to romantic floaty numbers.
